LANTA ISLAND
On Your own
Tham Khao Mai Kaew, The Caves A great break from the beach is a trip to this couple of caves in the centre of the island. Even the hike in through original forest, is pleasant. sections are large as church halls, others required you to squeeze through on
hands and knees. Sights include impressive
stalactites and stalagmites, bats and even a cavern pool that you can swim in,
if you descend via a long slippery slope with a knotted rope, a bit of a challenge
on the way back! A
Muslim family who lives near the trailhead to the caves offers guide service for
50 baht per person. You really need
a guide to find your way around, particularly inside the caves, and the service
is definitely worth it. The family
also runs a basic restaurant. The
caves are located off the lower of the two cross-island roads, down a narrow 1.5
km. Dirt track through a rubber plantation that ends up at the Muslim home. The Village Ban Saladan
